- Monsters in Our Midst examines a small but significant genre of literary expression that crosses historical and cultural borders. From ancient mythology to contemporary film, monsters have been romping in our midst with relentless stamina and strength. We will explore a variety of monsters through essential questions such as: What constitutes monstrous? Why do humans put so much effort into its fictitious manifestations? Why do monsters persist among cultures and over time? What cultural values contribute to the development of a dark side? In the course of this investigation, we will engage in an analytical dialogue with contemporary American society and begin to discover our own identities as responsible members of a moral community.
